Artefill
Artefill is one of the newer generation of dermal fillers available on the market and was approved by the FDA for distribution in the US in October 2006. Artefill is the only non-resorbable injection product so far to receive this approval for correction of lines and wrinkles. Unlike collagen or hyaluronic acid, Artefill maintains its cosmetic result for years. Once the Artefill filler is injected deep into the dermal layer of the skin, the plastic micro spheres contained in the bovine (cow) collagen based product begin to stimulate the body’s own collagen production. Over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, the body replaces the injected bovine collagen in the product with its own collagen and encapsulates each micro sphere, which is the key to the long lasting results. Artefill is not metabolized by the body and remains in the skin providing a permanent support structure against wrinkles and lines.
The procedure is generally performed in two separate stages at three month intervals and has been utilized effectively to treat deep wrinkles, depressed acne scarring and depressions below the eye area. It is also effective for traditional dermal and cosmetic filler areas of concern such as forehead lines and lines around the mouth area.
Since the product contains a bovine collagen component, a skin test is required. Results are checked after a four-week period, after which treatment can commence, if there is no allergic reaction. Results of Artefill have been reported to last as long as five years, with fewer severe complications recorded than other injectable collagen products. Rare problems such as lumpiness or granulomas may be persistent, but these conditions can usually be improved with steroid injection into the nodules.
